Designing With Composites
The cryogenic material properties of NEMA G-10 and G-10FRP and G-11 grades can vary widely while still meeting the NEMA specification. G-10 or garolite is a high-pressure fiberglass laminate, a type of composite material. It is created by stacking multiple layers of glass cloth, soaked in epoxy resin, then compressing the resulting material under heat until the epoxy cures.
The differences in thread count in the warp and fill directions result in different physical properties in these directions. G10 material has insulating properties that are beneficial for electrical applications. G10 also meets the standards set by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. The versatility of G10 FR4 allows it to be used through different electronic purposes like mechanical lines. NEMA G10 was the designation given to Glass Epoxy sheet composite by the National Electrical Manufacture Association to specify a consistent product between manufactures. Micarta was the Westinghouse trade name for their Micarta Sheet materials. Micarta materials alone can be any of the several NEMA Industrial laminate grades unless it is specified Micarta G10.
